Buying From a Seller Abroad

Buying from a seller in another country is usually straightforward. The two things that catch people out are time and tax, and both are knowable before you order.

It takes longer than the tracking suggests

An international parcel spends much of its life doing nothing visible. Tracking can sit unchanged for a week while it waits for a flight or clears a border, and that silence is normal rather than evidence that something has gone wrong. Ask the seller what she usually sees, rather than reading meaning into a tracking page that has not moved.

You may be asked for duties

Depending on where it is coming from and what it is worth, you can be asked to pay import duties and a handling fee before it will be delivered. That charge comes from the courier or the customs service, not from the seller, and she cannot waive it or refund it. Budget for the possibility instead of being surprised by it.

Ask before you buy, not after

A seller who posts abroad regularly knows roughly what her parcels cost to send and how long they usually take. It is a fair question and a quick one, and it is much easier to ask before the money has changed hands.

Discretion still applies

Customs paperwork carries a description of the contents. Sellers who ship internationally word that sensibly as a matter of course, but if it matters to you, ask what she puts on the label.
