Handling Pushy Buyers and Holding Your Line

KinkCoach · · 4 min read

Most buyers are polite and easy. A small number push, on price, on your limits, or on moving the conversation somewhere you did not agree to. You will meet them, and the way you handle the first one sets the tone for how you handle every one after.

Spot it early

Pushing has a shape. Repeating a request you already declined. Framing a discount as a favour. Claiming other sellers do it cheaper. Asking for something outside your listing before they have bought anything. Getting personal when you say no. Most of this shows up in the first two messages, which is why reading the first message properly saves you so much time.

Answer once, then stop

Say your position clearly, once. "My price is thirty five plus postage." If they ask again, repeat it in the same words. Do not justify, do not explain your costs, do not apologise. Explanations read as an opening. Repetition reads as a wall. Most pushers move on after the second identical answer because you are not giving them anything to work with.

Limits are not prices

Your price can be a decision. Your limits cannot. If someone asks for something you do not do, the answer is "I do not offer that" and there is no next sentence. Do not offer an alternative, do not soften it, do not treat it as an opening bid. A buyer who keeps pushing after a clear no is not a buyer, and no amount of money makes that a good order.

Ending it cleanly

You do not owe anyone a conversation. "I do not think I am the right seller for you, all the best" is a complete message. Then stop replying. Do not argue, do not have the last word, do not respond to the message that comes after. Block if it continues. Report if it becomes abusive or if they push on anything the marketplace does not permit.

Do not carry it

A pushy buyer is a bad ten minutes, not a verdict on your work. Sellers who quit usually quit after one unpleasant exchange they replayed all week. Note what happened, note what you would do sooner next time, and move on. Your good buyers are still there and they are still waiting for your next listing.

Write your three standard replies now, one for price, one for limits, one for ending it, and keep them somewhere you can paste from. Deciding what to say in advance is what makes you calm in the moment.
