Photographing Your Listings: Light and Setup

Most listings that do not sell have nothing wrong with the price, the item or the description. The photographs are just dark. You do not need a camera, a ring light or a studio. You need a window, a plain wall and ten minutes.

Window light beats everything

Stand facing a window during daylight. That is the entire lighting setup. The light is soft, even and flattering, and it costs nothing. Never shoot with the window behind you, because your phone will expose for the window and turn your item into a silhouette. Never use the built in flash, which flattens texture and makes fabric look cheap. If you only have evenings free, a cheap desk lamp bounced off a white wall beats a direct bulb every time.

Background discipline

Plain. A wall, a door, a bed sheet. What is behind you should say nothing about where you live or who you are, which matters as much for safety as for looks. Clear the frame of post, photographs, pets and anything with a logo. A cluttered background reads as careless, and careless is the last thing a buyer wants to see before paying you.

The shot list

Five images. One full item worn, one close on the fabric or texture, one detail shot of whatever buyers care about most in that category, one showing scale or fit, and one that carries a bit of personality. Shoot the same list every time so listing becomes routine rather than a project. Consistency across your listings also makes your profile look like a shop rather than a scrapbook, which is what a profile buyers remember is built from.

Phone settings that matter

Tap to focus on the item, then slide the exposure down slightly rather than up. Slightly under is recoverable, blown out is not. Turn the grid on and keep lines straight. Clean the lens, because a smudged lens is the single most common cause of soft, hazy photographs. Shoot more frames than you need and delete ruthlessly.

Editing without lying

Crop, straighten, lift the shadows a little. That is it. Do not add filters that change the colour of the item, because the buyer will receive something that does not match and you will have a dispute you cannot win. The photograph is a description, not a mood board.
