Pricing Custom Requests Without Underselling

Customs are the highest value work you do and the work most sellers price worst. Someone asks for something specific, you feel flattered, you quote roughly what a normal listing costs, and then you spend three hours on it. That is a job you paid to do.

Cost the time, not the item

A custom is not the item. It is the item plus your time plus the fact that it exists for exactly one person and cannot be resold. Add up everything: the conversation, the sourcing, the wear, the shoot, the edit, the packing, the postage run. Multiply that by what an hour of your time is worth. Quote a scope, not a price

Write down what you are agreeing to before you name a number. What item, what wear, how many photographs, how long the video, what is included, when it posts. Send that back to them and get a yes. Half of custom disputes come from two people who each thought they had agreed something different, and a two line scope prevents all of it.

Take a deposit

If the custom requires you to buy something, source something, or do anything you cannot resell, take at least half up front. This is normal in every trade and it is not rude to ask. A buyer who will not pay a deposit on a bespoke item is not committed, and the sellers who learn this learn it by eating the cost of a bespoke item once.

Changes cost money

If they change the request after you have agreed the scope, that is a new quote. Say it kindly and say it immediately. "Happy to do that, it puts it at sixty rather than forty." Scope creep is how a well priced custom turns into a badly priced one, and it happens one small favour at a time.

Know when to say no

Not every request is worth doing at any price. If it is outside your limits, the answer is no. If it is fiddly, low paid and from someone who has already haggled twice, the answer is also no. Your capacity is finite and every yes to a bad custom is a no to a good one.
