Seasonal Demand and Planning Your Selling Year
Sales are not steady across the year and pretending otherwise makes every quiet week feel like failure. Demand has a shape. Once you know it, you can plan around it instead of panicking through it.
The rough pattern
January is busier than sellers expect, because buyers have time and new year restlessness. Spring is steady. Summer dips, particularly August, when everyone is away and spending on holidays instead. September picks up sharply. November and December are strong until about the twentieth, then stop dead as postage deadlines pass and people are with family. Early January restarts it.
Categories move differently
Hosiery and thicker items lift in autumn and winter as the weather turns and people are actually wearing them. Gym wear spikes in January and again in spring. Sleepwear runs flat all year, which makes it a useful anchor in the dips. Shoes are less seasonal but heavier postage makes December tricky. Digital content and audio have no postage and no season, which is why they are worth building before the summer.
Using the quiet months
August is for building, not selling. Rewrite listings, reshoot photographs, plan your autumn stock, work on your profile. Sellers who treat the dip as a workshop come out of it stronger than sellers who spend it discounting. There is more on this in selling through the slow periods.
Planning stock ahead
Buy your autumn hosiery in August when it is cheap and plentiful. Have December listings written in November, because the strong fortnight is too short to spend writing. Know your last posting dates before December starts and put them in your listings, since nothing damages a good December like a parcel arriving on the twenty seventh.
Plan your time off
Take August. Take the week after Christmas. Sellers burn out because they never stop, and the months you would stop in are the months that earn least anyway. Tell your regular buyers in advance and they will wait.
Open a calendar and mark the four peaks and two dips for the next twelve months. Plan your stock buying and your time off around that, today, before the next season arrives.
