Selling Video Content: What Buyers Pay For
Video sells for several times what a photo set sells for, has no postage, no stock cost and no parcel to lose. It is also more work, and most sellers make the same three mistakes: too long, too dark, and no sound.
Length is shorter than you think
Two to four minutes is a product. Ten minutes is usually two minutes of content and eight minutes of nothing. Buyers rewatch short clips and skip long ones. If you have thirty minutes of footage, that is five clips, not one, and five clips sell for more than one long one anyway.
Light and framing
Same rules as stills. Face the window, plain background, phone propped on something solid. Shoot vertical if it will be watched on a phone, which it will. Do not zoom, because phone zoom is just cropping and it destroys the image. Move the phone closer instead. Check the frame before you record, not after, because you cannot fix a badly framed clip in editing.
Sound is half the product
Most sellers ignore this and it is the biggest differentiator available. Sound carries presence in a way that images do not. Record somewhere quiet, away from traffic and the fridge hum. If you speak, speak close to the phone. Many buyers who buy video are actually buying the sound, which is why finding your niche often means noticing what people ask for rather than what you assumed they wanted.
Pricing and delivery
Price by length and specificity. A short generic clip is a low entry price that brings a buyer in. A custom clip made to a request is your top rate, because it is your time and it exists for one person. Deliver through the marketplace so the transaction and the file are both on record. Do not send files through personal accounts.
Protect the file
Watermark discreetly, in a corner, with your working name. Keep originals backed up. Accept that anything sold can be shared, and price and behave accordingly, which mostly means never filming anything you would be devastated to see elsewhere.
Film one two minute clip this week in daylight with clean sound and list it. One good short clip teaches you more than a month of planning a long one.
