Setting Up Your Shop in an Afternoon

KinkCoach · · 4 min read

The reason most shops never open is not difficulty. It is the belief that everything has to be right first, which turns an afternoon of work into a project that never gets a start date.

Photograph one batch, once

Set up one corner with decent light and shoot everything you have in one go. The setup is the slow part, so doing five items costs barely more than doing one. This single habit is the difference between a shop that fills up and one that stalls at two listings.

Write the first listing properly, then copy it

The first is slow because you are deciding your format. What you cover, in what order, how you word wear time and postage. Once that exists, every later listing is that structure with the details swapped, which takes minutes.

Three listings is enough to open

A shop with three real listings looks open. A shop with one looks abandoned. You do not need a full catalogue, you need enough that a visitor can see this is a going concern rather than an experiment.

Write the boring parts once

Postage, turnaround, what you do and do not offer. Put them somewhere they apply to everything rather than repeating them per listing. This saves the time and it also stops the small inconsistencies that make buyers ask questions.

Put a face on it, or a style

A headline photo and a couple of lines about how you work. Buyers are choosing a person as much as an item, and a shop with no character reads as a placeholder even when the listings are good.

Then open it and improve it live

You will change the prices, rewrite the descriptions and reshoot half the photos within a month. All of that is easier with real buyers looking at it than it is in your head beforehand.

Done and open beats perfect and unpublished. Every seller with a busy shop started with something they later found embarrassing.
