Storing Delicate Pieces So They Last
When you buy something special from an independent seller, you want it to stay special. Delicate fabrics can lose their shape, fade or snag surprisingly quickly if they are stuffed into a crowded drawer. A few simple habits keep them looking and feeling the way they did when they arrived.
Give them their own space
Keep delicate pieces apart from everyday clothes. A small drawer, a fabric box or even a lined shoebox works well. Zips, hooks and rough fabrics are the most common cause of snags, so a little distance goes a long way.
Fold gently or lay flat
Lace and satin are happiest folded softly or laid flat. Avoid hanging stretchy pieces for long periods, as the weight can pull them out of shape. Structured items such as corsets keep their form best when stored flat or on a padded surface.
Let leather breathe
Leather needs a little air. Store it in a cloth bag rather than plastic, away from radiators and direct sunlight. A light wipe and an occasional leather conditioner will keep it supple.
Keep worn items sealed
If you have bought a worn item for its scent, keep it in the sealed bag it arrived in, or a fresh zip bag, and store it somewhere cool and dark. Opening it often will let the scent fade faster.
Check them now and then
Every few months, take your pieces out and look them over. Refold anything that has creased, air out boxes and replace any bags that have torn. A few minutes of care keeps a favourite piece in your collection for years.
