When an Item Does Not Sell

An item sits for weeks and nothing happens, and the obvious conclusion is that nobody wants it. That is almost never the reason. Far more often the listing is fine and the item is simply invisible.

Start with the first photograph, because for most buyers it is the only one they ever see. Look at it small. Open your own shop on a phone, at the size it actually appears in a grid, and ask whether you could tell what the item is in one second. A photograph that is beautiful at full size and unreadable at thumbnail size will lose to a plain one that is clear.

Then read your title as a stranger would. Sellers title things the way they think of them. Buyers search the way they speak. If your title carries a private name for the item and none of the words someone would actually type, the listing is not competing badly, it is not competing at all.

Price next, and compare it against what is live now rather than what you paid or what you hoped for. Look at the listings actually selling in your category this month. If you sit above them, a buyer needs to see the reason in the photograph or the first line.

Age matters more than most people expect. Marketplaces tend to sort towards recent activity, so an untouched listing sinks regardless of its quality. Editing it brings it back into view, which is why a stale item often sells shortly after a change that had nothing to do with why it was not selling.

Change one thing at a time and give it a week. If you rewrite the title, reshoot the photograph and drop the price on the same afternoon and it then sells, you have learned nothing, and you will repeat all three next time.

And if it still does not move after all of that, it may simply be the wrong item for this audience rather than a bad one. That is worth finding out early, and it is not a verdict on the work.
