When Two Buyers Want the Same Item

KinkMarket · · 3 min read

Most of what sells here exists once. There is one of that item, in that size, worn those days, and when two people want it the situation is decided in a few messages. Handled well you keep both of them. Handled badly you lose the sale and the second buyer quietly stops opening your listings.

Decide the rule before you need it

The workable rule is that the item belongs to whoever pays first, not whoever asked first. Asking costs nothing and paying is the decision. Put that in your terms while nothing is at stake, because inventing it in the middle of two conversations always looks like you picked a favourite.

Do not hold it on a maybe

A hold with no payment and no deadline is how a one-off item sits unsold for a fortnight while a buyer who was ready moves on. If you do hold something, put an hour on it and say so plainly. Most people find that reasonable, and the ones who do not were never going to pay.

Give the second buyer something real

Telling someone it has gone is the end of the conversation. Telling them what you will have, and roughly when, is not. It costs one sentence and it is the difference between a person who bought nothing and a person who is waiting for you. Do not promise a date you are guessing at, because that turns a warm buyer into someone chasing you.

Never let the same item sell twice

Take it down the moment it is paid for. A listing left up after the sale generates enquiries you have to disappoint, and eventually a payment you have to send back. Refunding somebody for an item that was already gone is the single fastest way to look like a shop that does not know what it has.

Two people wanting the same thing is the good version of this problem. It means the item was priced and photographed well enough that more than one person moved. Say what the rule is, keep it the same for everybody, and it stays good news.
