When You Change Your Mind After Ordering

You placed an order and then thought better of it. This happens more often than anyone admits and it is not a character flaw. The only thing that really matters is how quickly you say so.

Before the parcel is packed you are having a conversation. After it is posted you are asking a favour. That is the whole of it. A seller who has not yet cut into fabric, or worn something, or queued at a post office loses very little by hearing from you today. The same seller three days later has spent time and money that cannot be recovered.

So send the message now rather than spending the evening working out the right words. Something short is fine. You have changed your mind, you are sorry for the trouble, and you wanted to tell them before they went to any effort. You do not owe anybody an explanation of why, and a seller who demands one is telling you something useful about themselves.

What happens next is theirs to decide, because every seller sets their own terms and those terms are published on their shop. Some will cancel and refund without a thought. Some will already have bought materials. Some items are made or worn to order and genuinely cannot be sold to anybody else, and in those cases a partial refund, or none, is not a seller being difficult. Read what they published before you decide what you think is fair.

Where this goes badly is silence. People go quiet out of embarrassment, the parcel goes out anyway, and now there is a delivery nobody wanted and a conversation far harder than the one that was avoided.

And if it has already gone, take it gracefully. Then next time, when you find yourself hesitating before you press the button, hesitate for the extra minute. That is the cheapest place in the whole process to change your mind.
